Ultrasound diagnostics is one of the widespread research methods in various fields of medicine. In September 2021, VSMU purchased modern high-class ultrasound devices to carry out educational and research work at a new technological level.
Two modern ultrasound units at the Department of Internal Medicine and ultrasound diagnostics of FAT and SR will be used to solve current clinical problems in the highly specialized clinic “Vitebsk Regional Clinical Hospital”. At the moment, the teachers of the department carry out daily ultrasound examination of organs and systems. All teachers are certified specialists with long-service experience, and in a number of areas of ultrasound examination of the stomach, intestines, musculoskeletal system and soft tissues are among the best specialists in the Republic of Belarus. The department conducts advanced professional training “Ultrasound diagnostics in gastroenterology”, “Ultrasound diagnostics in diseases of internal organs” and “Ultrasound diagnostics of the musculoskeletal system” for doctors of healthcare institutions, many of whom have worked for more than a decade, and have extensive experience and good knowledge. And, of course, outmoded equipment cannot meet the demands of such specialists in practical training. Thanks to the advent of two new modern ultrasound machines, students have the opportunity to take the transducer and see “what is inside the patient.” This approach is consistent with the concept of “University 3.0”.
At the moment, the department is carrying out Ph.D. and three doctoral dissertations related to the use of modern ultrasonic technologies.
At the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology of FAT and SR, the availability of a new high-class ultrasound machine will allow expert ultrasound to be carried out in the most difficult clinical cases, thereby increasing the quality of pathology diagnostics and optimizing patient treatment; organize master classes for examining pregnant women and assessing fetal development. It also provides an opportunity for doctors studying in advanced training and retraining cycles “Ultrasound diagnostics” to directly conduct an ultrasound examination of a patient under the supervision of a teacher, to master the operating panel of the equipment, feel the principle of operation of the device, work out the adequacy of image display, master the change in the diagnostic mode from 2D to 3D mode with the principles of Doppler and mapping, to expand practical skills on a high-end apparatus.
High-class equipment with a complete set of sensors and functions expands the possibilities of completing one doctoral and two Ph.D. theses.
At the department of hospital therapy and cardiology with the course of FAT and SR, the new apparatus for ultrasound diagnostics will be actively used in the scientific work of the department, including for the task on the topic “To develop and implement an algorithm for determining the likelihood of developing diseases of the circulatory system in people of working age in urban unorganized population”. It is planned to conduct practical training with the use of an ultrasound machine with the students of advanced training and retraining courses in the specialties “General Medical Practice”, “Cardiology”, “Functional Diagnostics”, “Ultrasound Diagnostics”, which will allow training not only ultrasound diagnostics doctors, but also integrate assisted ultrasound examination of patients by doctors who do not have retraining in the specialty “Ultrasound diagnostics”.
At the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a modern ultrasound diagnostic apparatus will be used during practical classes with 4-6 year students of the Faculty of General Medicine and FOST to teach ultrasound techniques in obstetrics and gynecology in order to form knowledge, competence and practical skills for their use in clinical practice.
The location of the department on the clinical base allows an ultrasound diagnostic apparatus to be used to carry out obstetric and gynecological examinations of patients of a maternity hospital in order to improve the quality of medical care for women.
